Our lovable four-legged friends love to get outside. Whether it be a mooch through the park or playing fetch in the garden. Depending on where you live, the walking options may be limited so how do we make our garden something more appealing and friendly for your canine companion?
Below we look at what you can do to make your garden an oasis for your dog.
A shady haven
Chasing after a ball or sniffing a scent for hours can be hot and heavy work for a dog no matter what the breed or time of year. A perfect little spot under a tree can always be the ideal rest stop, allowing them time to cool down, have a nap, or chew on a well-deserved snack.
Something to dig
Artificial grass is perfect for dog owners as it won’t get dug up. Dogs are inquisitive creatures though, so a sandpit is ideal. They can bury toys, hunt for things, and just have a safe and fun playtime without ruining your garden.
Water
No matter whether it is a hot summers day or a cold winter evening, if your dog is enjoying the garden, he or she will need time for refreshment and a supply of clean water will keep them happy whilst they are outside.
Something to climb on
Pet shops supply a variety of pet toys and activities, but you can also find things from within the garden itself. An old tree stump or perhaps a discarded brick stack could all work as something for your pooch to explore. If placing items on an artificial lawn, these items can stay in place for a long time with peace of mind they won’t cause any damage or discolouration like a regular lawn would suffer.
A variety of plants
It is often said that you should only look to put tall plants in a garden frequented by a dog. They are less likely to tear it apart during ‘playtime’ and, therefore, keep your garden looking colourful. However, a few lower-level herbs will help bring out their inquisitive nature and give them a tasty treat! There are also some beautiful small plants that dogs won’t be interested in that are also non-toxic. Choose items such as Alstroemeria, Kniphofia or Scabiosa.
Mix up the surfaces
Have you considered a pathway through your garden? As your dog bounds from turf to stone and back again its sensory awareness will develop with a change in surfaces.
Tunnels and hiding spaces
As we have already touched upon, dogs love to play and a game of hide and seek always goes down well. Invest in a tunnel and not only will the dog have something to play with, but he will also have another safe haven to rest in.
A shower
That’s right, you may have an artificial lawn but what if your dog has ventured through the vegetable patch or investigated the rose bush? Chances are, they may appear a little dirty afterwards! This simple addition not only keeps your dog nice and clean but your house will stay that way too.
There are some things to be aware of though that are not just extra items for your garden but will keep your pet happy:
- Keep garden tools packed away
- Do not use insecticides or fertilisers that can be poisonous
- Don’t lose shady spots
- Cocoa mulch shouldn’t be used
