You may be looking around your garden and thinking it needs a bit of a refurb. Perhaps the cold weather and darker nights have given it a bleaker look than normal and now you want to give it a fresh, vibrant feel.
So when should you start this new and exciting gardening revolution? Some would say the summer, the hot weather and longer days making it the perfect chance to devote a long period of time to your project. Others would say winter, the ground is softer and come summertime, you’ll be reaping the rewards of your labour. Below you will find a seasonal breakdown of the pros and cons of when to lay your artificial grass.
Spring
Spring is seen by many as a great season to get your artificial grass laid down. The weather has got a touch warmer, the days a little longer and – due to the likelihood of rain, – the ground soft enough to excavate. This can also be problematic as if it’s too soft the excavation process can be more difficult. Along with this, many of your flowers, shrubs or trees have started to bloom and this excavation could lead to you damaging them. However with the correct tools and expert help, laying artificial grass in spring is completely achievable.
Summer
Summer is a popular time to lay down artificial grass. The benefits of artificial grass are clear on different levels, both personal and practical. The hot weather and the longer days make the task more pleasurable. In practical terms the artificial grass acclimatises to the ground better due to the higher temperatures. The backing being warmed by the sun making it more pliable and less likely to try rolling back into its original cylinder shape.
The downsides of a summer install though are important to consider too, the ground is likely to be much harder making an excavation harder. Most, if not all your garden will be in full bloom and may need to be cut back or altered in order to get your new artificial lawn down and perhaps the biggest negative would be that you don’t get to fully enjoy your garden during the balmy summer months.
Autumn
Autumn is a season that can be great for installing artificial grass. Your garden is typically reaching the end of its natural life for the year, so any damage is not as detrimental. The weather is still good enough to allow yourself time to work on it and the ground will be a little softer than in the summer but not as soft as it gets in winter. The negatives do need to be considered though. Autumn can bring stormy weather and if heavy rainfall comes, the task of laying the grass proves to be very difficult. Adhesive won’t bond as well as it should and the sand may clump together if the turf is too wet.
Winter
We touched upon winter earlier and it has its pros and cons regarding laying artificial grass. Most of your plants will be less active. You could move them without fear of damage and needing to make alterations, plus you won’t be using your garden as much, so you can work the job in shorter bursts. With the darker nights though – and the wetter ground – the job does become a lot more challenging. The adhesive backing wont naturally warm with the colder weather and if the existing lawn is too waterlogged, you could have problems with the installation of the sub-base.
