You know that the benefits of artificial grass mean that you’ll have a lush lawn all year round, with very little maintenance. Your artificial grass doesn’t need mowing, watering or fertilising, which means you can spend less time tending to your lawn and more time enjoying your garden.
Even so, your grass will still need a small tidy-up, usually every three months – or more regularly if you have pets or children on the grass often. We can provide annual maintenance for that professional touch, but below are some top tips to keep your artificial grass looking perfect in the meantime.
Find the Right Tools
You’ll first need to make sure you have the right tools to care for your artificial grass. You should get hold of a stiff brush or plastic rake. Never use a metal rake or a brush with metal bristles on your artificial lawn as this could cause damage.
You might find it useful to also have a leaf blower or garden vacuum to help clear away debris. Whilst you won’t need to water your artificial lawn in the same way as natural grass, you might still find it helpful to have a hose available for cleaning purposes.
Get Rid of Leaves and Debris
If leaves and other debris like sticks and dirt are left on your lawn, it could allow weeds to grow through the artificial grass. Make sure you get rid of all these bits and pieces that make their way on to your lawn, either by brushing it with a stiff brush or plastic rake or using a leaf blower or garden vacuum. As well as preventing weed growth, this will also make sure your lawn is kept looking pristine.
Brush the Lawn
Even if your lawn is relatively leaf and debris-free, you’ll want to give it a good brush every now and then, with a stiff brush or plastic rake. Overtime, you’ll notice that the pile may start to go flat as the lawn is used. But with regular brushing, the pile will keep looking fresh and springy, just like natural grass. You should try to brush in the direction of the pile as much as possible. But if heavy furniture or equipment has left marks in your lawn, brushing against the grain can help spruce up the area.
Move Your Furniture Around
If you have heavy furniture, sports equipment, or play equipment on your artificial lawn, you should try to move it around every now and then, so it doesn’t stay in the same place for too long. This will prevent some areas of the lawn receiving more wear than others. You’ll also have a chance to brush under the furniture and make sure it’s kept clean.
Keep it Fresh and Clean
Our Easigrass pet installations use a special PU-backed artificial grass, specifically designed to reduce odour. However, if you have a pet using your garden then you’ll still want to keep your lawn clean by giving it a rinse with the hose. You can also get special artificial grass cleaning products that can help your lawn to smell fresh.
If you have any stains or spills on your grass, you can clean these just using warm water, washing up liquid and a brush. Make sure to dab any spills with a paper towel first, to try to take away the bulk of the stain and give it a rinse with the hose after you’ve cleaned it.
Remove Weeds
In the unlikely event that weeds or moss appear on your lawn, you can remove them using weed killer. Make sure to conduct a patch test somewhere discreet on your lawn before you use the weed killer across the rest of the lawn.
Weeds shouldn’t appear if the lawn has been installed correctly, so if you spot any then it may be because there is debris on your grass. Before you treat the weeds, give the lawn a good brush to remove the debris and prevent more weeds from growing.
Protect High Traffic Areas
Just like with natural grass, paving slabs can help protect your artificial grass from too much wear and tear, especially in areas that are walked often. A paving slab pathway is a simple way of making sure your lawn stays looking fresh and you won’t have to keep brushing the areas that have heavy footfall.
