Summer is fast approaching and we all, no doubt, want to make the best use of our garden. The lighter evenings, the balmy weather and the vibrant colours make them a social hub as well as a focal point of your house.
With a garden being a living, functioning ecosystem of its own, it can take a lot of care to ensure it’s at its best all the time. With that care, can come a lot of expense, a lot of time and a lot of hard work. Why not make it all a little easier and keep your garden low maintenance yet still beautiful and enjoyable!
Our experts here at The Sussex Artificial Grass Company have put together a few handy tips to help you keep your garden low maintenance but still something to be proud of.
1. Be seasonal and use containers
Rather than planting lots within the soil itself, you can use containers and make your garden look stunning year-round. Decorative containers lend themselves to a variety of garden types and mean that you can change what items are on display as and when needed. You will need to a little bit of work, but it is significantly less than if you have planted a variety across the entire garden. Simply change with the season and you’ll maintain a garden of colour.
2. Consider an artificial lawn
Your lawn is one of the most demanding parts of any garden. It is there all year long and requires cutting and treating regularly. A lawn made of artificial grass means you can spend time caring for the rest of your garden without worrying about what happens to the grass. Suitable for all climates, pet friendly, kid safe and never going to get overgrown, once it is down, its is there for many years. In most cases, 10-15 years!
3. Keep plant variety to a minimum
It would look beautiful to have a stunning arrangement of different plants and flowers from around the world. Will you be able to maintain them though? Many require differing levels of care. Therefore, why not keep it simple and get variations of the same plants. Some will have differing colours yet require the same care as each other.
4. Think about gravel, paving or raised beds/planters
It may be that you don’t want may plants at all, it might even be that simplicity is your aim. In that case, you could fuse together the idea of an artificial lawn and lay gravel or paving where there would normally be soil and make it an easy to use but modern looking garden. A lawn that never needs any work and plants that can be switched out easily makes for a garden with a nice centrepiece of a lawn and attractive plants and features around its perimeter.
5. Mulch where you can!
If you do have soil around your garden, there is the likelihood you will get weeds every so often. By laying mulch over the soil, you help the garden do its work, so you don’t have to. A mushroom compost or a composted bark can be laid to about 10cm deep, this then covers the soil and helps activate it meaning that seeds from the weeds are broken down by the insects and bacteria living within the soil. The mulch also acts as a source of nourishment for the plants you have already growing too. Enabling them to feed without the need for additional supplements from you.
6. Find some succulents
Over the past few years, succulents have grown in popularity, and it is no surprise. Very hardy as well as being available in a variety of shapes and sizes, succulents thrive with very little care or attention needed. A few of these throughout the garden could mean the hardest work you have to do could be prepping the barbeque.
7. Consider shrubs and perenials
Whilst some succulents are perennial, others are annual so settling on the type you need is down to you. However, there are a vast array of colourful perennials you can add to your garden to give it a splash of vibrancy. Geraniums are great for this and require very little care. Many are quick spreaders meaning you can end up with some stunning sections of garden thanks to just one or two plants.
With shrubs you have the bonus of a hardy bit of greenery that will sometimes give you hints of different colour throughout the year. Thanks to their size, they allow you to fill spaces easily. Look out for evergreens like Viburnum and Deutzia.
8. Utilise an area for the children
Depending on your garden size you may be able to divide it into sections. One full of permanent greenery (thanks to your artificial lawn, and our plant tips!) and another that gives the children a mini playground. Lay some concrete and decorate with games and pictures. Not only will you be encouraging outdoor play, but you will also cover over areas that may have taken considerable time to maintain otherwise.
