Your garden doesn’t have to just be a bed of roses. It doesn’t have to have a pond. But does it need a putting green? Perhaps!
Adding such a unique feature to a garden has become much more on trend over recent year. Whether a practice space for a golf enthusiast or an active area for the kids, a putting green can certainly add a little extra to your garden. Not only that but, adding such a feature can also benefit your own mental wellbeing and increase the social aspect of your garden. How, though, do you bring this new creation to life and get the best out of it?
Let us give you our guide on how to put that putting green in your garden and have you hitting a hole in one.
Choose a location
The first thing to do would be choose the best location within your garden, you may still want to keep much of the decorative features so plan where it would sit best without disturbing the areas you would still like to show off.
Create the design
Decide how much of your garden you want it to take up, you may have the prime location already decided but how much of it do you want occupied with a putting green? Once you have a layout in mind, speak to us about the best artificial turf for your putting green.
Pick the correct products
Ideally you want artificial grass for your putting green, it will remain consistent, drain well, and require no additional upkeep like natural grass. At The Sussex Artificial Grass company we provide Easigrass which, in our opinion, is perhaps the best option to go for. It’s UV protected and has a 10-year lifespan. This means your putting green will remain resilient throughout the year. Whilst natural grass may be more resplendent of a standard golf course, the upkeep alone may mean you spend less time putting and more time cutting. With the benefit of the Easipad layer underneath the turf too, we also reduce injury risk which may be prevalent if you have younger golfers on the green!
Self-install or have it laid for you
Make a decision on who should lay the turf. It can be a simple enough task but at The Sussex Artificial Grass Company we are available to assist with replicating your very own St Andrews. So, should you have any concerns about the job yourself, feel free to ask for guidance.
If you are installing it yourself though, follow a few simple guidelines to ensure you get a smooth roll of the ball.
- Check your design
- Mark out the layout in your garden
- Remove any preexisting lawn-dig about 50-100mm
- Factor in any contouring, little hills and bumps could make a great addition to your green but may also be too steep for the ball to make it all the way!
- Fill in any imperfections with an aggregate then compact it
- Level the area to provide a strong base
Next steps
Once the ground is prepared you will want to make sure that you have a hole to hit the ball into! This should ideally be set into a small amount of mortar or concrete so that it doesn’t move about. Make sure the top level of concrete or mortar is below the surface so that subbase can be levelled around the hole. The hole cup, no more than 5mm proud of the stone level.
Laying the turf
Before laying your turf you will need to ensure your Easigrass is clear of any imperfections so we would suggest laying it out over your newly prepped area-including the hole giving 25mm overlap of any seams. You can then cut off any excess. We would recommend leaving 12 hours before moving onto the next step. This will allow creases to drop out of the turf.
With the creases now out of the turf, relocate the hole and cut out with a suitable blade. Glue the edges and joins to ensure full resilience to weather and footfall. You can then carefully close all the seams for a stunning finish. A sand infill will then need to be applied to give added durability. It can take 24 hours for the adhesive backing on the turf to fully set so for now, keep your pitcher and putter in the bag!
Pick your putter!
Once the turf is fully settled you are good to go, the turf will give you 365 days a year of enjoyment and will not need any further maintenance. Aim for that hole in one and have some fun!
